AjaxLife down

Uncategorised 17 Comments

AjaxLife is currently down, due to being banned by Linden Lab. I will re-enable it when I have figured out why.

AjaxLife’s current state

Uncategorised No Comments

First post here in a long while!

AjaxLife, as it stands, is effectively not in active development – the last change to anything other than the splash screen was almost a year ago. I haven’t actually given up on it; I’ve merely lacked the motivation to continue development (this is not helped by libsl/libomv making breaking changes every version). So I’m sorry for the lack of updates.

However, the service is, nominally, still running. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, Linden Lab have taken to banning it periodically. I can only assume that this is an automated response to griefers using it, as bringing it up on a new IP usually resolves the issue for an undefined length of time (and it does accurately report itself, so it seems unlikely to be an intentional ban against AjaxLife).

If you receive messages informing you that “Second Life cannot be accessed from this computer”, and that you should contact support@secondlife.com, AjaxLife has been blocked again. Unfortunately, it appears there isn’t much I can do for this; I apologise for the inconvenience.

(Incidentally, I know support@secondlife.com doesn’t work any more. Linden Lab writes the error messages, not me.)

AjaxLife service restored

Downtime 33 Comments

AjaxLife is back again. In theory. I took the time to move the controller to a different server, so it may or may not all still work.

It’ll remain down in your own personal universes until your DNS servers get up to date. Until then, iPhone users can try https://89.16.177.17/iphone/ (which will work for a long time), and everyone else can try http://67.202.16.25/ (which will change frequently).

The signup issue is not actually resolved, so please continue to vote for VWR-734.

AjaxLife down, donation refunds available

Uncategorised 8 Comments

AjaxLife has been down for the last couple of weeks due to Linden Lab’s consistent failure to make the Teen Grid signups work. Please all go vote on JIRA WEB-734, which I would link to, but WordPress doesn’t seem to like me much today.

As for those of you who have donated, you do have some valid cause to be irritated. There has been one vocal complaint, and I imagine that there are more who don’t feel strongly enough to actually publicly comment on the issue, but none-the-less feel somewhat put out. Whilst I would remind you that AjaxLife has been costing $120-130/month for much longer than people have been paying, and that it will return in future (and donations will carry forward), I understand that it is not running now. As such, in return for your support, I will be happy to refund any donations you have made since November 11th (31 days before AjaxLife was closed, which is the length of time between the spending of donations).  If you would like to request such a refund, please email me at katharine@kathar.in with the email address from which you sent your donation, and I will make arrangements for your money to be returned ASAP.

I do hope that this episode has not impacted on any of those who may have intended to use AjaxLife and/or donate towards its upkeep in future. In the meantime, I will point to MovableLife (https://movablelife.net) as a possible alternative – whilst far buggier than AjaxLife, it has the significant advantage of actually being up.

December Donation Request

Donations 15 Comments

It’s next month, and it’s time for me to request donations once again! Looking for $120 this month (in case you’re wondering, I’m picking the number out of last month’s bill and using it for this month’s costs – it’s easier that way).

The standard disclaimer about it not being my account, but an adult’s, etc. still applies.

Oh, and sorry about Linden Lab blocking it. I’m going to look into having it automatically jump ship to another IP when that happens.

AjaxLife’s future

Donations 32 Comments

AjaxLife currently costs roughly $130/month to run (less when it’s not actually running properly). Of this, I have made exactly $0/month back (lately).

As such, starting December 1st, AjaxLife will run for a month only when $130 in donations have been collected. The remainder of the time it will be down. So, if you want to use it, please donate!

A donation counter is available below:

The standard disclaimer about it not being my account, but an adult’s, etc. still applies.

This does mean that if the required donations are not reached reliably, AjaxLife’s uptime will be even patchier than it always is. On the other hand, if they are reached, it will be more reliable. Amazing, eh?

(And if the donations required, or something close, are never reached, AjaxLife will never be up.)

AjaxLife 0.5.1

Uncategorised 18 Comments

AjaxLife 0.5.1 has been released, featuring not much of anything.

Bug fixes

  • Desktop version no longer shows “None” in the group list if you aren’t in any groups.
  • iPhone version properly escapes messages.
  • iPhone version resets unread local message count to zero when you read the messages.
New features
  • The iPhone version allows you to accept or decline offered teleports
  • The iPhone version lets you tap new IM notifications to be taken to the IM panel
  • The iPhone version can be used properly in landscape orientation (you might count that as a bug fix)
Oh, and there was a 0.5.0 (and a 0.5.0.1) – it was the iPhone version referred to in the previous post.
I am aware that some users are having issues receiving IMs in the iPhone client, but have yet to determine the cause.
I am also aware that the desktop version will tend to announce that you’ve been disconnected when you actually haven’t; I will fix this when possible. For now, the workaround is to ignore the warnings. An easy way to check is by saying something in local chat – if you hear it back, you’re connected.

iPhones

Release 44 Comments

AjaxLife is now available for the iPhone and iPod touch! It’s currently about where AjaxLife itself was just over a year or so ago – you can chat to people, IM those on your friend list (online or offline this time ’round), and receive IMs from arbitrary people. Thus far, there is no movement, no inventory, no money transfers, etc.

To use it, simply visit http://ajaxlife.net on your iPhone or iPod touch. You will be redirected to a secure “login proxy”, which is used because the iPhone could not reliably run the code to encrypt your login details. From there you will be redirected to the standard server.

New features

  • “Offline Friends” list to complement “Online Friends”
  • Following disconnection from the server, a more obvious dialog will be shown. Note that it’s not necessarily true – it might be a momentary blip.
  • Textures shown from inventory have a checked background behind them, which shows through transparencies.
  • Added a server-side ban list – I can ban you now. :p

Changes

  • Removed “Properties” from inventory context menu in Internet Explorer (it didn’t and won’t work)
  • Moved the “Online Friends” and “Groups” tabs into a new “Contacts” window. Instant Messages is now only visible when there are instant messaging sessions in progress.
  • Unsuccessful texture downloads are now shown as such, instead of waiting forever.
  • Server now uses libsecondlife 0.5

Bug fixes

  • Profiles load in Internet Explorer again.
  • When starting a group IM, proper notification is given when it is (or isn’t) created, instead of mostly hidden errors
  • Internet Explorer users can drag the Parcel Media window down without the drag aborting after twenty pixels.

This update will (should) appear automatically without your intervention. Please enjoy Linden Lab’s new splash screen, too.

AjaxLife 0.3.8 release notes

Release 2 Comments

New update without any downtime. And you don’t, in theory, have to clear your cache, either. Hurrah.

Anyway:

New features

  • Display of parcel title next to your position
  • Parcel media support
    • Two new buttons will appear when applicable in the toolbar, labelled “Music” and “Media”
    • These buttons will only appear if you have the QuickTime plugin installed
    • The “Media” button will show the parcel media – most often a video
    • The “Music” button will show a window in which you can play the parcel stream
    • Nothing will auto-play
    • Web pages are not supported
Changes
  • Added version number to static script URLs, avoiding the need to clear cache.
Known issues
  • If a video is playing, it will show through any windows above it. Workaround: don’t put any windows above the video. You can shrink the video to help
  • Videos will always open at the same initial size, although they will play at the correct aspect ratio. You can resize the video yourself.
  • Streaming audio may stop playing if the window is closed and then reopened. Solution: click elsewhere on the time bar thingy, and also make sure it’s actually playing.
