AjaxLife service suspended

Downtime 40 Comments

AjaxLife service has been temporarily suspended, pending investigation into its intermittent but extremely frequent refusal to make any connections to anything for no entirely obvious reason. As long as it’s in this state, running it costs me money for no benefit to anyone whatsoever.

Hopefully it’ll be back soon.

OHhh could you do that? reinstate the earlier version?
Please, don’t make me actually have to do work at work.

The old version wasn’t actually any better. It just crashed more obviously, and was thus restarted with more or less 100% reliability.

I will think about it, though.

ajaxlife is my only chance of getting inworld from here, and since I’ll be here 14 days it would be really really great to have even an older version running… ;)

:*(I’ve never used ajax before but I think it’ll do to get me in sl somehow. My laptop crashed yesterday. My only other internet machine is running on Windows 2000. I wonder if ajax will work on such a late model. Does anyone know? Thanks a million for any response.

FYI I run my own compiled version of AjaxLife on localhost and it appears to run and connect to the main grid without problems.

I do experience an intermittent “we have lost communication with the servers” while running but that’s survivable!

Thanks for giving me a way to get in to SL!

The issue only manifests under load (and never when testing). This, of course, makes it a complete pain to debug, though it does give some pointers as to the issue may lie.

Your application is awesome, a GREAT thing to do for lots of people who appreciate your efforts. What can we possibly do to assist you in returning this to operational status and further to help you in keeping it going and improving?

Hey community, does any one know the pc specs needed to run ajaxlife smoothly??
    Thanks.

  24. Katharine Berry Says:
    February 6th, 2010 at 10:29 pm

To run the client, you need something that will run a reasonably web browser which is (preferably) not Internet Explorer. Other than that it uses very few resources (the full desktop client will run on an iPhone, albeit with some UI screwiness unrelated to performance).

The server consumes resources which are more or less arbitrary. However, my primary server (which features all the processing power of a $200 netbook from a year ago) can quite happily run several simultaneous sessions, as well as all its normal duties.

Wow this Ajax things sounds very cool, very very cool. I’ve got an iPhone and have been looking for a way to access second life via this marvellous device while out and about and this seems like the perfect solution, shane I cane across this just when there seems to be issues =(.
I do seriously hope you resolve the issues and you have this window into our sl back up and running, you are a pure genius, I look forward to using this portal to my second life soon.
See you all in world xoxox

Is there somewhere I can still donate? I just stumbled across this and even though it is down right now, would like to contribute.

You may even think about charging $2-3 a month for your service, since it’s the only on available. I know I would pay it =)

  33. Katharine Berry Says:
    February 15th, 2010 at 1:47 pm

Well done on getting the thing to work. I must, however, decline responsibility if AjaxLife causes your server to catch fire, and/or if Linden Lab IP bans you because some griefer used it (this happens quite a lot).

  34. Katharine Berry Says:
    February 15th, 2010 at 1:59 pm

Also, perhaps wisely, that uses an older version of AjaxLife – so the map, group IMs, textures, etc. won’t work.

  35. John Reynolds Says:
    February 15th, 2010 at 3:24 pm

    Katherine,

Could you elaborate? is http://ajaxlife.psykephaeton.net/ not safe to use?

  36. Katharine Berry Says:
    February 15th, 2010 at 3:27 pm

It’s as safe to use as my own is, assuming you trust him as much as you trust me (I recommend you trust neither of us, as would Linden Lab (if following link, search “Katharine Berry” for relevant part).

Its lack of functionality is not dangerous at all – just irritating if you want to use the broken bits.

  37. John Reynolds Says:
    February 15th, 2010 at 3:54 pm

Thanks for the info. I think i’ll just wait until yours is back up =)

  38. Talismere Roecastle Says:

I will refrain from using any ajaxlife not directly provided from Katharine. I use ajaxlife since a bit more than a year and my avatar was perfectly safe. Although at the beginning I was so scared to use Ajaxlife xD. I’ll wait too, if it means that after the long wait, I can use Ajaxlife with lesser crashes and better stability, I’m all *thumbs up* for it :)

Here’s hoping that it gets resolved. In any event, thank you for the spectacular service you have been doing with an application that puts my work to shame. :-] I’ve suggested before but will again: might you be willing to have an “open” donation link on the blog so that one can donate at any time? I’m certain you have spent so much on server fees over time that there’s little chance of any donation not being simply compensation for past outlays. :-]
