December Donation Request

Donations

It’s next month, and it’s time for me to request donations once again! Looking for $120 this month (in case you’re wondering, I’m picking the number out of last month’s bill and using it for this month’s costs - it’s easier that way).

The standard disclaimer about it not being my account, but an adult’s, etc. still applies.

Oh, and sorry about Linden Lab blocking it. I’m going to look into having it automatically jump ship to another IP when that happens.

    hey katharine,

would it be possible for you to have an adult set up a donation box on the MG for you and cash it out periodically? many of us who make money in L$ to support our second lives would appreciate donating a few bucks via that system. I can offer land but you might want someplace more highly trafficked than my home in Caledon — I could also see if the Nonprofit Commons would offer land.

also, if you had someone host a monthly dance party, (I could do this, even, with some help) in the tradition of rent parties that penniless artists used to have, for you on the MG, I bet you would have no problem raising that amount of money. I recently threw together one that raised L$90K for a friend who had lost stuff in a disaster — this one probably raised more than normal because it was truly a bad situation, so your mileage may vary a bit.

also: AjaxLife sessions have been timing out a lot for me lately or otherwise failing to fully connect. any idea what this is? it’s possible that this is a client side issue for me as I have recently added some different accessibility tweakings on my computers, but as this has happened on both a PC and Mac now I am suspicious.

Have there been reports of being able to receive objects when logged in using AjaxLife when you have the person muted? I just received an object from someone I know I have muted. This doesnt happen when I am logged in using the LL client.

First, I find your efford to bring a text client to the world great, and it shows you are a skilled programmer and designer. I hoped Linden finally would get someone of your level, so things would finally got done.

But… (there is always a but), why is the AjaxLife service taken down because of a login issue with the teengrid, not allowing people like me to access the main grid as well anymore? Linden won’t take this as a serious thing to demonstrate against their patch and repair policy, they ignored things by far more official…

    Sad greetings, Yuki

The service has been taken down because I am on the teen grid - and until Linden Lab display some interest in the tiny area they have confined me to (by making it work), I am having nothing more to do with them.

As such, I have disabled any services I provide until they at least fix this one showstopper bug. Which is entirely their fault -launching a new signup process without even finishing it, then doing nothing to finish it off.

Sorry, but until LL listen, everybody loses.

    Katherine -

I understand you’re angry at LL for the disrespect they’ve shown you… But, please don’t take this anger out on the rest of us. *makes a choking noise* We… depend on you… and ajaxlife to stay connected to our real lives (j/k) throughout the day. Please… Help us…

What happens to the $122 in donations to keep the service going for a month? I would imagine the client being turned off would not incur the same cost. Will those donations go back to their donators, or could you please enable this for another month as your hosting/bandwidth costs are covered??

It incurs a cost of several cents. The donations will be carried over until such a time as Linden Lab fix the issue mentioned. I suggest you direct further complaints at them - email addresses such as philip@lindenlab.com, blue@lindenlab.com, mark@lindenlab.com (actually, that one’s just a guess), etc. may be useful.

Were I to return the donations, many donators would be unable to receive the money without meddling with PayPal accounts, and , furthermore, the amount would be significantly reduced due to PayPal’s fee being deducted twice, as well as converted between various currencies.

    Katharine,

I totally sympathise with your anger and frustrations caused by teengrid signups being broken. LL (like any other big company) sets priorities on issues to be fixed and appearantly this one isn’t high on their list. If only *we* could set the priorities… ;-)

I regret the (temporary?) discontinuation of the AjaxLife service as it is unsurpassed and will be missed dearly while it is down.

I hope your protest will contribute to the issue being solved, even though I wonder if LL will even notice. No offense…

Thank you for your hard work in bringing us AjaxLife!

I’m very sorry to know that LL is basically ignoring the existence of the Teen Grid again *sighs*

The least I can do is to try to gather some attention to this by posting some blog articles…

I don’t know about you, but as soon as you took our contributions you were pretty much obligated to keep Ajaxlife up for as long as we contributed for. Now I am sitting here at a Job with a really heavy duty firewall and can’t use Ajaxlife. I don’t even know why I wasted my money helping you keep the servers open. I will not be doing that again. I thought I was doing a favor.

I wonder if you are lying about why you closed Ajaxlife or if this is a scam. I never thought you would be the type to take my money and close Ajax just because you are mad about a linden thing. Besides (as we know) the Lindens somewhat listen to you, I don’t see how this is even an effective way to garnish attention towards your issue.

    This is kind of Rediculous.

No, it’s not a scam, and I’m not lying - see the JIRA entry linked to for some . As for the part of the grid I’m restricted to being broken, which you so helpfully term “some linden thing” - I remind you that they run the place - I feel that I’m justified in feeling it to be a significant issue.

Your donations will carry over to next time. However, if you feel that you do not wish to continue to supporting AjaxLife, I will be happy to refund your payment (at some cost to myself, due to PayPal fees). If you wish for such a refund, please email me at katharine@kathar.in with the email address you used to send money.

I apologise for the inconvenience to you, and hope you will continue to use AjaxLife once service is restored.

The Lindens don’t really listen to me, by the way - I kinda fell out with them the last time I yelled at them about exactly the same thing, over a year ago.

Wow - there are some seriously ungrateful people around - yeah mike, i’m looking at you. Now get back to your McJob before I tell your boss.

  14. Mike Says:

    McJob?

Yeah I am typing this now from my McDonalds order taker.

    Want fries with that?

    Heh.

Thanks Anu. I may sound harsh and ungrateful, but there are some reasons behind this.

Yes I think the Lindens are making some bad choices, but I think this is not hurting the Lindens in the least…this move is actually hurting Katharine supporters (which, believe it or not, I still am)

And yeah I was kind of a jerk about it, I really do appreciate her, but at the same time it had to be said. I am sure there were others feeling the same way.

Why punish supporters of Katharine, when this is a Linden issue?

She has a good following of people and some of those actually depend on her….it’s pretty cool if you ask me.

And Katharine, I know about Moveable Life and it just plain sucks. The chat windows are all borked, I constantly lose connection and it just isn’t worth the hassle.

I basically used Ajaxlife because I could chat, etc at work without firewall restrictions that most programs can’t/wont overcome.

    Thanks!

“I don’t know about you, but as soon as you took our contributions you were pretty much obligated to keep Ajaxlife up for as long as we contributed for.”

You have a strange concept of the word “donation.”

(I say this as somebody who donated in the November drive. It in no way implied an obligation of any sort.)
